The Children’s Ministry is separated into three classes, the Nursery (ages 0-2), the Woodland Realm (ages 3 – Kindergarten), and the Explorers (1st through 5th grade). All the doorways are color coded and we have viewing windows if you feel led to check on your children during the service. With exception of the Nursery, the children go to their respective classes immediately following the worship portion of Sunday Service.
The Children’s Ministry is led by Pastor Christiaan who hails from a family of teachers and has his Master of Divinity in Christian Education. Please don’t hesitate to reach out via email if you have any questions or are interested in becoming a CHA (our term for volunteer) and joining the Sunshine Squad, becoming a Guardian of the Woodland Realm, or joining the Explorer Corps. Alternatively, if you’re ready to go, you can fill out the CHA application and read and sign the Policy on Protecting Students (POPS).
Everyone who works with the children at Shoal Creek Baptist Church have gone through the qualification procedure as listed in our POPS.
Nursery (Ages 0-2)
The nursery is easily identifiable as it has a bright yellow doorway… well technically… it’s Pineapple Smoothie, but yellow is pretty close.
When Does It Meet? Sunday drop off starts at 10:45 am and when advertised.
What to Expect: We know that at this age, it’s really up to the child to tell us what they need. Do they need to sleep? We’ve got two cribs, fresh sheets, and comfy blankets. Explore? We’ve got a soft, freshly vacuumed rug, perfect for crawling around on. Play? We’ve got a bunch of age-appropriate toys, puzzles, and other things to keep their attention.
Our CHAs could pray for, sing with, or read bible stories to your child. We want the children in our nursery to feel loved, cared for, and celebrated while their parents are able to freely participate in the worship service.
Our CHAs: Members of the Sunshine Squad have had training, passed criminal background checks, are first aid and CPR certified, and we prioritize experience with children this age in our volunteer selection – whether that be professionally or having had their own children.
Our Verse: “Arise, Jerusalem! Let your light shine for all to see. For the glory of the LORD rises to shine on you.” Isaiah 60:1.
The Woodland Realm (Ages 3 – Kindergarten)
The Woodland Realm is our class for ages 3-5, it’s got a burnt orange doorway.
When Does It Meet? During the Sunday morning service after family worship and when advertised.
What to Expect: We know that children this age are still developing, and we plan for different learning styles. We incorporate time for learning, singing, playing, and maybe even snacks. This group is more focused on crafts and will probably hand you something they’ve created in class when you pick them up. We focus on biblical basics, talking about who is in the bible, bible stories, and biblical memorization.
In the Woodland Realm we want to familiarize the children with the general stories and people of the bible and reinforce some of the broader lessons. We do this in an age appropriate way, so they have fun doing it!
Our CHAs: The Guardians of the Woodland Realm have had training, passed background checks, and have their CPR and First Aid certifications. They love kids and are ready to help them grow into who Jesus made them to be!
Our Verse: “You will live in joy and peace. The mountains will burst into song, and the trees of the field will clap their hands!” Isaiah 55:12
The Explorers (1st through 5th grade)
The first room you’ll come across in the children’s area, they have sliding barn doors with the doorways colored Finley Blue and Traver’s Red. You may also notice a throne and tent in one half of the room. (Yeah, we’re that cool).
When Does it Meet: During the Sunday morning service after family worship and when advertised.
What to Expect: Children’s Church is all about exploring the people, places, and stories of the bible! Letting the children take part in that story is essential to the differentiated approach to teaching we believe in. We’ll reinforce the story with a craft or activity related to the core lesson of the story that they’ll be able to share with you.
There is truth throughout the stories of the bible. The Children’s Church class is on a path to discover that these stories are so much more. They are accounts of things that happened at a real time, in a real place, to real people and we want to help them experience that as much as possible in a classroom in Canton Georgia.
Our CHAs: Members of the Explorer Corps have had training, passed background checks, and have their CPR and First Aid certifications. They also must be ready to get silly because they never know what role in the story they’ll have.
Our Verse: “God has hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge in Christ.” – Colossians 2:3.
