Day 16 – Jesus Claims to be God. March 21, 2019
The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?” “I am not possessed by a demon, said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.” At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?” Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word. Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.” “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!” “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds. John 8:48-59
After being accused of being demon-possessed, Jesus at this point seems to have been pushed to the point of no return! And yet, we know that He does not leave himself at the mercy of men, and all things are in His timing. But it seems like Jesus is ready to burst with this new information: that all who obey His word will never see death. The people are even more incredulous at this statement and they point out that Jesus is claiming to be more powerful than Abraham and the prophets. Jesus answers them, “Very truly I tell you, before Abraham was born, I am!” There is no mistaking that Jesus from His own mouth claimed to be God — the great I am! If the Jews had understood this phrase another way, they would not have picked up stones to stone him for blasphemy. Jesus made it clear that He and the Father are One…they are both God. Jesus is more than just a good teacher, or merely a man, He has not left us that option. Jesus claims to be God…and He is.
Lord Jesus, I sometimes have a hard time understanding how You and the Father and the Holy Spirit are all One and the Same. But it is clear that You meant for us to understand that You are God. So help me to treat You with the honor, glory and praise that are due You. May I never lessen Your words or Your teaching. Likewise never let me try to get out of living as You did. I am amazed that You loved me so much, that You died for me and humbled Yourself to experience life as a man. Thank You, Lord. You are awesome…Amen.
